Money and payments

Currency

  • Spain uses the Euro (€) as its official currency.
  • Banknotes are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 euros.
  • Coins are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents, and 1 and 2 euros.
  • You can exchange currency at banks, exchange offices, and some hotels (though commissions may be high).

Cards and payments

  • Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are widely accepted.
  • Card payments are very common, even for small purchases.
  • Some small establishments may prefer cash, especially in rural areas.
  • ATMs are widely available and accept international cards.

Tipping

  • Tips are not mandatory but are appreciated.
  • In restaurants, it's common to leave between 5% and 10% if the service was good.
  • In bars and cafeterias, you can leave small change.
  • Taxi drivers don't expect tips, but you can round up the amount.
